THE SUMMER OF 2008
Dan in the 40 below room at Alaskaland. This is a special room cooled to minus 40 degrees BELOW ZERO Fahrenheit. It shows visitors what it is really like to be
in a temperature that cold. We could go in it too if we want to remember what it will be like here in December 2008. Only my camera went in along with the person
escorting people into the room.

On June 16, Grandson, Matthew Beverst came to visit. He just left this morning, 25 July at 1:00A.M. He returned to Michigan about an hour ago. Takes some time to fly from North Pole, Alaska (Fairbanks International Airport) to Detroit, Michigan. Then it takes another hour to drive from the Airport in Detroit to where he lives in Clinton Township, Michigan. While he was here we did some of the same things we did with Dan but we added a few more things (since he was here longer and wanted to also) like driving to the Arctic Circle and back (left here at 11a.m. and drove up there and directly back .. got back to Fairbanks at 3:30a.m. and decided to have breakfast and then go home).
What do you see? You see this sign. No, you won't see Matthew in it LOL as he is "holding up the earth" and fighting of mosquitos. LOL
22 June we went to a midnight service with friends who attend St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Fairbanks. It was a service to celebrate the Summer Solstice. Some of the prayers were said in Tinglit (SP??) which is an old Eskimo dialect/language. These pictures were taken about 1:00 in the morning. Yes, 1:00 in the morning - it stays daylight 24 hours this time of year. Matthew loved the daylight as we do also. The service was held at the top of a mountain. During the service we saw the bottom "edge" of the sun just touch the mountain top and work its way back up into the sky again. This is a photo of the sun just at the edge of the mountain top - the duplicate "sun" on the right is a reflection - was shooting with my digital camera. The sun does not go any lower than that. Picture on the right is Gip and Matt (in the middle) with our friends, Sue on the left and Jane on the right. We met Sue and Jane on a train trip to Denali (Mt. McKinley) in 2001 and have been fast friends since then. Sue and Jane are cousins and also along on this trip was Jane's sister, Debbie, but Debbie was not in this picture. I think she was off finding me a coat LOL. We were on top of a mountain and it got down to 50 above zero F with brisk winds (brrrrrr) which is about +10 Celsius.
Matthew enjoyed playing Gip's guitars. The picture on the right is Matt outside on our Deck playing Gip's acoustic Guitar. He especially enjoyed playing Gip's Gipson electric Guitar (A Les Paul Gip's had for years). He enjoyed playing my piano too (picture on the right). It is a Yamaha Clavinova with a GH3 Keyboard (weighted keys when it is in the piano mode). I bought it because I despise tuning pianos with a passion and with the low humidity up here, peg boards stretch out easily, etc., etc., etc. Therefore, we contacted The University of Fairbanks Music Department and this is the one they suggested. Matthew made use of the other modes it has. He also recorded a song for us on a disk in the piano so we can remember his music.
The day before he left, Matt recorded a song for us on You Tube using his Camera. If you want you can hear it here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=T3B97Psv9TI
Just remember, it is not music of the 50's through the 90's, but rather music of today is the best way to describe it.
You can see it was raining out when he recorded the song for us. He has others too which he recorded on another site, "Sing/Snap."
It is so quiet now in our home here in Alaska except for the sounds of boats on the Chena River. We miss Matthew so much!! We miss Dan so much!!
